Choosing the Right Electrolysis Probes

We’ve all experienced the moment when a happy electrology client shifts from being a client to a friend. When this occurs, they confidently refer those closest to them, and our practice thrives. It’s a great feeling in so many ways.

In speaking with electrologists that have been able to keep that chemistry alive, we’ve learned that they are always looking into different ways of improving the customer experience in their clinic. Frequently this means that they immerse themselves in continuing education and they evaluate everything about their practice from their insertion techniques to the equipment and supplies they use.

Following the example set by the most progressive electrologists that we’ve sampled, we offer the following information to help you determine if you are using the best probe for each treatment.

Invest 5 Minutes.

Read the following few short paragraphs and you may find that the effectiveness of your treatments improves while your client’s comfort and satisfaction increases. Do this a few times a week, and you might experience unintended growth in your practice!

Whether you call them needles or call them probes, what you use matters. It’s important to know that both one-piece and two-piece probes will deliver different results and sensations, in much the same manner that insulated and non-insulated probes do. But with all the options on the market, it’s sometimes difficult to make the right choice. We believe that the Pro-tec line of probes or needles offers you the best combination of features you’re looking for today. The following should assist you in making the right choice every time.

Insulated or non-insulated probe?

Insulated probes are becoming more popular and they are highly recommended by most electrologists today. These probes or needles are made of stainless steel and are coated with medical grade Teflon, with only the tip remaining uncovered. When using an insulated probe, the energy emitted with each impulse converges at the tip of the probe and the base of the follicle, where the hair growth cells are located. This focusing of the energy exactly where it’s needed increases the effectiveness of each insertion thereby allowing your power setting to be slightly reduced. Reducing both the intensity and duration of the current will increase your client’s comfort but it’s also important to understand that the insulation provides another level of protection too. It protects the surface of your clients skin from cutaneous reactions that can occur when current touches the skin surface. When you add the lower intensity and duration to the additional protection for the surface of the skin, you have a win-win.

Something to consider is that the Pro-tec line offers two types of insulated probes allowing you to fine-tune your selection and treatment options to a greater degree than with other more conventional insulated probes.

First, it’s important the know that with insulated probes, your insertions may require a little more precision in order for the energy to be directed to the target points which are the dermal papilla and the bulge. Pro-tec’s IsoGard and IsoBlend vary slightly but for good reason. The IsoGard probes are used in thermolysis mode only and more of the probe is covered in Teflon. Only the tip is exposed. IsoGards are designed for the higher temperatures generated in pure thermolysis mode. IsoBlend probes have just one half of their length protected with Teflon. This makes them effective for Blend treatments and for use on deep insertions utilizing thermolysis modalities. If you are a fan of Sterex two-piece needles, you should enjoy using Pro-tec’s two options in this category.

One-piece or two-piece probe?

In each instance, the name says it all, or almost all. A one-piece probe or needle is made from a single piece of solid stainless steel that utilizes an oval, micro-polished tip. This feature offers ease of insertion and minimizes the risk of piercing the follicle. Due to the somewhat cone-shaped and rigid nature of this design, one piece probes or needles can vary slightly in diameter and can make it difficult for an electrologist to detect the presence of resistance. Resistance is typically noticed at the base of the follicle and when the angle of insertion is not correct. Use requires experience and care. The Pro-tec one-piece insulated and one-piece Gold probes feel familiar to the touch for those electrologists that are used to Ballet needles.

A two-piece probe is cylindrical in shape and is connected to its shank at time of manufacture, using a crimping technique. The major advantage of a two-piece probe or needle is the flexibility of its shape. This two-piece design gives an electrologist instant feedback when either angle or depth of insertion is slightly off, with the way it will flex or bend. And since the probe or needle is actually a separate component from the shank it’s connected to, it slides easily into the follicle. For ease of insertion and the greatest precision, use two-piece probes.

The Correct Size

The size range for probes varies from brand to brand. Pro-tec probes range from 1 to 5 and when selecting a probe, you must take into account the size and depth of hair to be treated. Finer hair requires a smaller probe or needle, say a 1 or 2, while coarse body hair may require a 3, 4 or 5 probe or needle. To visually assist you in your choice of probe, Pro-tec probes come with a color-coded collar to distinguish between the various sizes making then easy to identify at your workstation. This identifying feature also protects against contamination.

F Shank and K Shank

All Pro-tec probes or needles are available in both F and K shank, in all sizes.

Probes for Thermocoagulation

Pro-tec offers two-piece probes or needles specially designed to treat telangiectasias, cherry angiomas, skin tags, milia and other imperfections. Like all Pro-tec probes or needles, they are disposable, individually wrapped and will remain sterile for five years.
